About Our Action Plan

Working together to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible is a big goal for Upper Hutt. We’ve been doing pretty well over the last few years with a range of initiatives that were introduced in the 2017-2023 WMMP. These initiatives include, funding for local schools to take part in the Enviroschools programme, supporting community led waste minimisation activities with the Environment and Waste Minimisation Fund and increasing the capacity at our recycling station but the reality is, we need to do more. And we need to do it together – less waste equals a greater place remember!

The Upper Hutt City Council Local Action Plan contains Upper Hutt-specific actions that feed into the wider vision for the draft Wellington Region Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) while ensuring we meet the needs and concerns of our local community.

Our draft Local Action Plan outlines what we plan to do to manage and minimise our waste over the next six years.

Our Actions

The actions for Upper Hutt were created through a range of workshops that included various stakeholders in our community.

Here’s a quick list of some of the actions:

  • Council managed kerbside services for standardised recycling and organics.
  • Supporting local and or regional food scraps collection and processing.
  • Promoting and supporting waste minimisation at events and festivals.
  • Supporting the recovery of e-waste, through promotion, collection events and or drop-off facilities.
  • Providing ongoing support to the Recycling Station drop off facility, to minimise contamination and increase recycling rates.
  • Supporting domestic hazardous waste collection at the Silverstream landfill.
  • Investigating and supporting ways to reduce litter and illegal dumping.
