About Our Action Plan

We know that all Wellingtonians, regardless of age or occupation, care deeply about our city’s environment and the roles we can all play to protect and enhance it.

Addressing our city’s waste is one step we can take to reduce the impact of waste on our environment.

The Wellington City Council Local Action Plan contains Wellington City-specific actions that feed into the wider vision for the draft Wellington Region Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) while ensuring we meet the needs and concerns of our local community.

Our draft Local Action Plan outlines what we plan to do to manage and minimise our waste over the next few years, in alignment with our Zero Waste Strategy.

Our Actions

The vision of the WMMP is, Working together to minimise waste - for people, environment, and economy'.

This vision seeks to foster a collaborative approach to the way resources are managed and minimised in the Wellington region. It will guide the system change needed for the entire region, with a focus on transforming how waste is generated, managed, and minimised.

We’re proposing a range of actions for Wellington City. Here’s a quick list of some of the actions:

  • Deliver the benefits of reuse, repair and waste prevention through active use of Council regulations, compliance activities and enforcement.
  • Deliver lasting behaviour change interventions by making people understand the benefits of change and then helping them make that long-term change easy.
  • Work with mana whenua partners and other stakeholders to transform Wellingtonians’ relationship with packaging and reusables.
  • Support and encourage businesses, social enterprises, and charities to provide services and create local and regional markets for waste products and materials.
  • Encourage innovation to support delivery of Wellington’s transition to a zero-waste future.
  • Increase the amount of material that is recovered, reused and recycled to minimise waste and reduce the amount of virgin materials used in production.
